Principle 1 – deeper understanding

Meet their responsibility to respect children’s rights and commit to supporting the human rights of children

Principle 1 calls on business to respect children’s rights and commit to supporting the human rights of children.

This principle is, in many ways, an overarching theme of the Children’s Rights and Business Principles and outlines two distinct responsibilities for businesses.

First, the principle addresses actions that a business should undertake to respect and uphold children’s rights. Simply put, businesses should take action to prevent violations of children’s rights and avoid actions that negatively impact the lives and rights of children.

Secondly, the principle calls on businesses to support children’s rights by actively promoting, advancing and safeguarding the rights of children. In this way, businesses can be a positive force for children and their rights.

Principle 1 is at the heart of companies’ due diligence processes. It is also at the heart of the Children’s Rights and Business Principles and serves as an overarching tenet that could and should be considered for each of the ten Principles.
